I woke up the next morning to a horrible feeling of nausea deep in my stomach and I had to clench my hands against it to keep from puking right then and there. I sprinted to the restroom and vomited up my dinner. A dizzy feeling crept over me and I tried to banish it with a breakfast of cheerios.

I loved watching the little wheat circles float in the milk, pretending they were different dimensions, different ways my life could have gone. If my mother hadn’t died, if my father weren’t evil, if I hadn’t married Tucker, all the possibilities flooding my head. I pushed them all away and went outside to pet Blizzard…he would help calm my swirling thoughts.

“Good boy,” I murmured. Then my cell phone rang and I fished it out of my pocket and answered it. “Hello?” I asked. “Hey this is Storm. Do you want to go the movies with me?” I smiled despite myself. “Sure, I’ll be right there.” Then I jumped into a taxi and headed to the theater, excited at the prospect of a date. Storm greeted me enthusiastically and we went inside to watch the movie. It was fantastic and I had a great time! Then we said our goodbyes and he pulled me into a hug, his hand straying a bit too far down, but I ignored that.

“I had a great time,” he whispered. “Me too,” I said. Then he yanked me into a kiss and I responded eagerly, finally somebody loved me.

Then we made out, for a long time. A few kids walking in pointed at us and giggled. We continued kissing until it grew too dark to see and I bid him goodnight.

“Good night, Misty. Maybe next time we can check out my house and have a little fun.” Storm said, pulling me into a last embrace.

“It would be awesome to spend a night with you in bed. You look like you could be entertaining.” My heart skipped a beat and I pulled away. What was he suggesting? Did he truly mean it? I left the date smiling, but it quickly changed into panic, there was a tiny nudge in my stomach and I leaned to the side, vomiting into the grass. That’s twice in a day. Am I sick? Then I understood, the sickness, the raging hormones, all were part of it. I was pregnant.

Oh my dear Lord! I was pregnant with Tucker’s child!! My heart beat rapidly and I smiled through my tears. I was thrilled to be having a baby, but horrified that it was Tucker’s as well. I vowed never to let him know of the child, he would claim to be its father and I couldn’t allow that. I drove myself home and stood in the middle of my kitchen, terrified. What had I done?

Oww! My back ached in pain and I was exhausted from the long day. My stomach seemed to be rather large for so early on in the pregnancy.

Oh well, there is only one cure for that. Rest. I climbed into bed and fell asleep immediately, my dreams filled with bouncing baby boys and darling little girls. The only concern I had was how I was going to break the news to Storm and raise this child with so little money.

Meanwhile, Blizzard was drinking from a pond near the house, satisfying his thirst. He hadn’t seen Misty all day and was worried she had come to some harm. She never left him hanging.

Suddenly, another horse approached him. It was wild, Blizzard could tell by the look of it. It tossed its head and its beautiful braided mane danced in the wind. He cautiously drew nearer, until he could exchange a few words with the mare. She responded and they struck up a conversation.

It seems to have gone well because that night, the mare spent the night at Misty’s house, sleeping outside along with Blizzard.

I woke up the next morning, wondering how to tell Storm of my pregnancy. Well he is bound to find out sooner or later, so why not tell him today, I reasoned. I called him up and asked if he could meet me by the beach.

He agreed and I caught a taxi there. As soon as he spotted me, he swooped me up into a hug, our usual greeting.

Then he took my hands in his and we rocked back and forth. “So how was your day?” he asked.

“It was good, I guess,” I replied. “Fantastic!” he said, dragging me into a kiss.

“Why don’t we head over to my place and get to it?” he asked. “I washed my sheets for you, the last girl was a complete, well, it doesn’t matter.” He trailed off. I looked at him a little sheepishly. “Well, actually, there is something I wanted to tell you.” I said. He stopped suddenly and gave me his full attention.

“I think I’m pregnant.” I said. He stepped away, a little taken aback. “But we haven’t, you know, done it yet,” he insisted.

“It’s not your baby, its Tucker’s,” I said holding my breath. He looked at me, appalled. “So get rid of it!” he exclaimed, “I dont want to have anything to do with that little monster!” I stepped back, hurt that he would say that, and disappointed with his reaction.

“It will be okay,” I reassured him. “Maybe somebody will adopt him.” He nodded emphatically. “Well I hope so!” he enthused. “What do you say we go practice for after you give birth?” he asked me. “Well…I guess so,” I replied. He jumped up and down with excitement.

“Okay let’s go!” he said, dragging me to his car. When we reached what I assumed was his house, he pulled me up the staircase and plopped me on the bed, and we just sat there for a few minutes.I couldn’t help but think it was a little early in the relationship for this, I had met him just yesterday, but my relief at finally finding somebody who loved me drowned out my doubts.

“Are you ready?” he asked. I nodded almost imperceptibly and he pulled me under the covers.

When we emerged a few hours later, he turned to me abruptly. “That was fantastic! So when should I schedule you next? I mean Kayla is coming over tomorrow and Cindy the next, but maybe Friday night at Cane’s house, Jacob needs this room back by then.”

I stared at him, uncomprehending. Then it dawned on me. “You used me!” I screamed furiously, my jaw clenched in anger.

“Umm..yeah. Why else would I have picked you? You have one of the nicest chests I have seen in a while and trust me..” I interrupted him with a slap to the face. “What the heck is wrong with you?” “What do you mean?” he asked incredulously. I looked at him in disgust. “Nevermind I don’t have to explain myself to you. I can’t believe I even considered giving up my baby for a life with the sorry likes of you” I said. “Go away!”

“Okay, but you have to be out of here by seven. Jacob will want his house back,” he said as he made his way to the door. “This isn’t even your house!” I yelled.

“Of course not, I made up that whole sob story about my parents, duh.” he replied, then stormed out of the house. “I never want to see you again,” I screamed after him. I cried and cried for hours. How could I have been so stupid? Obviously the only thing he wanted was a night in bed with me, he didn’t even care about me. This wasn’t even his house and apparently I wasn’t the only one who had been used this way! Then I heard a car door slam, and I looked out the window. And standing there on the sidewalk in front of the house, was the hottest man I had ever seen in my entire life, with a dog standing loyally at his side.

I decided I should go out there and introduce myself, so he didn’t freak out when he walked inside and saw me just standing there, sobbing. I cautiously walked past his dog, but it didn’t even bark. His eyes lit up when he saw me making my way towards him. “You must be Misty. Hi, I’m Jacob Knight,” he said. “How do you know my name?” I stammered. His gorgeous dark blue eyes intimidated me as did his beauty. “Storm has told me a lot about you, but I didn’t truly believe him until I saw you. It seems he was telling the truth for once, you really are beautiful, unlike all the other girls he takes advantage of. So tell me, why did you let him do it?” he asked me.

He said all this in one breath, his eyes never leaving mine. I loved how they didn’t stray to my chest, but remained locked with my own. “I didn’t know,” was all I could manage to get out. He looked at me with concern in his eyes. “You must be new to town. I’m sorry you had to meet him first, you didn’t deserve such a poor welcome.” I just nodded my head. He could tell I was beginning to feel uncomfortable and decided to change the subject. “So, what brings you to Appaloosa Plains in the first place?” he asked. “Umm..” I mumbled, “Well, I’ve always lived in the big city, but truthfully I love small towns and horses, so this seemed like a great place to start fresh. Plus, here nobody hates me and I’m at least a little desirable, as Storm proved to me.” He smiled, “Me too. I came here to visit my grandma when I was eight and since then, I couldn’t keep myself away.” I smiled, I loved listening to his voice, it was like honey, sweet and smooth. It washed over me and he smiled back, and that’s when I knew I was smitten and there was no going back.

“Well, maybe we can hang out some time,” he suggested, a grin breaking across his face and advertising his perfect white teeth. “Yeah,” I agreed, “I could use a friend around here.” “Well, if you ever need anything, then I’m the one to call,” he said, flashing that smile again. I could feel my knees going weak.

“Thanks!” I said. Then we both just stood there for awhile, silently looking into each other’s eyes. That’s when I noticed that his sapphire blue eyes matched my own almost perfectly. My jaw dropped and he chuckled. “What?” he asked. “Your eyes,” I said, unable to finish the sentence. “Yeah I know, they’re gorgeous,” he said jokingly. Then more seriously, “But they don’t even compare to yours.”

“Don’t be silly, they’re exactly the same,” I argued. “Totally wrong, as usual. Yours are brighter, filled with more life and spirit and faith and love.” he said, each word coming out slower than the last. “What do you mean as usual? I’m never wrong,” I said, pleased with his response. “You were wrong. Earlier you said you were a little desirable,” he said. My face fell. He lifted my chin with his finger and electricity raced through me. “You are way more than a little desirable, you’re irresistible Misty.” My heart raced in my chest, thumping so loudly I thought I would be surrounded by thirsty vampires by now. Then he walked past me, lightly brushing my arm with his, “I’ll see you later,” he called over his shoulder. His dog walked proudly beside him, wagging its tail excitedly.

I smiled, secretly thrilled. The chemistry between us was undeniable, I was falling head over heels for Jacob Knight.

Chapter 1.1

I would like to give a thanks to Jess from the lumiererainbowcy.blogspot.com for a few of his ideas.

I arrived in the center of town early the next morning. The sun blazed down, basking me in its comforting warmth and the scent of lilacs came to me on the breeze. I smiled. This was my fresh start. I had been given a second chance and I knew that this was going to be a whole new life for me. Blizzard hovered uncertainly nearby, his nostrils flared slightly and his ears pricked forward. Then, he let out a nicker. My eyes followed his gaze. I let out a gasp. Standing there, staring at me, in the center of the park, was a handsome man. Nervous butterflies stirred in my stomach and I did my best to calm them. I took a deep breath and began walking towards him, he would be my first acquaintance in Neverglade.

“Hi, my name’s Misty,” I said .He smiled, “I’m Storm, Storm Knight. Are you new to town?” “Yeah, I just got here this morning,” I replied.

“Well, maybe I can show you around some time.” Blizzard nudged my hand and Storm’s eyes widened. “Oh, sorry,” I said. “This is Blizzard, my horse. Blizzard, this is Storm.” Blizzard stepped forward and sniffed Storm. Storm was completely still and when Blizzard stepped back, his eyes softened. “Wow, he is a beautiful stallion.”

“Are you a horse lover?” he asked, his eyes glittering with delight. “Yeah, I wouldn’t give up this booger for the world! What about you? Do you have any pets?” I asked. “Yes. I have Petal. She means the world to me.” he replied, gesturing toward the center of the park. There, a beautiful pink and white palomino was standing patiently, saddled and ready to ride.

“Wow! She’s beautiful,” I breathed. He chuckled softly. “Yeah, but she can be a bit proud at times.” “Well, she certainly has something to be proud of,” I replied. My heart did a little flip when he laughed, he was gorgeous. “So what brings you here?” he asked. My lower lip quivered and tears threatened to spill over. “Umm…my father, Tucker,” I stammered. Each word was like a blow to the stomach, pain cutting into my heart.

“What happened?” he asked gently, his voice soft and concerned. I don’t know what it was, maybe I was so fed up with my father and Tucker and everything that had gone wrong, maybe it was hormones, or maybe it was the worried look in Storm’s eyes and the way they held mine that made me spill out every detail of the past few weeks. I raged on and on and he sat there, patiently waiting, for what seemed like hours. Even Blizzard and Petal got tired of waiting and started their own conversation.

But Storm’s eyes never left mine, his gaze riveted. He was so close I could feel the heat radiating off of him, and shivers ran across my skin. When I’d finished, we stood there in silence, watching the light slowly fade from the sky. Then he impulsively reached out and hugged me. My skin burned where he touched me and desire raced through me. I was so surprised and delighted, I had no idea what to say.

He buried his face in my hair and whispered, “I’m so sorry,” his lips just brushing my ear. My heart beat did double time and electricity pulsed through me, every nerve alert and on end. I was surprised how much reaction he could get from me, we had only just met. Then he pulled back and we locked gazes, our eyes communicated what we couldn’t say in words. The way he looked at me was so sincere, I couldn’t help but smile.

Nobody had ever looked at me like that before. Like I was worth their time, like I had feelings, like I deserved more than I was given. It was then that I realized I was developing a crush on Storm. “Well, I better be heading home soon. Thanks for everything,” I said. His eyes drooped a little. I could tell he was disappointed, but I needed to at least find a place to stay before night came. “Your welcome and if you ever need anything, I’m just a call away.” he said. Then he whistled for Petal and she galloped over to him. I watched him mount her and nudge her gently, whispering in her ear. She took off at a trot and his body swayed easily to the rhythm of her gait, he was an experienced rider.I wandered around town, on Blizzard, until I found a small one bedroom house for sale close to the park.

I immediately bought it and began unpacking my things. I had just enough to time to fix a quick meal of canned soup before showering and climbing into bed. Maybe starting fresh would be good for me, I thought.

I apologize for the short chapters, sometimes I find a good ending point that I can’t pass up. LOL! 🙂

I felt trapped and completely, and utterly alone. That’s not how one should feel 6 months before their own wedding. The day before I had met my groom, Tucker Crime. His last name suited him well, I thought grimly.

Without a word of greeting, not even an introduction, he wrapped his thick arms around me and began kissing me, his slimy tongue dragging across mine. I felt an instant dislike towards him, but pushed it down. My father had complete control over me until my eighteenth birthday, so I decided to make this marriage the best it could be. I was only 17, but my father had already signed me off to an arranged marriage. One year, I promised myself silently.

He took my hand and dragged me into his house. Then, he wrapped his arms around me from behind, his hands traveling dangerously close to my chest. My heart fluttered in panic. “You’re so sexy,” he whispered in my ear. Then he pulled me into his bedroom and pushed me down onto his bed. “And now you’re all mine.” My heart thumped crazily against my ribs and I tried to swallow my protests, but couldn’t. “Shouldn’t we wait until after the wedding?” I reasoned with him. His eyes were stuck on my butt when he said, “Definitely not!” Then his mouth smothered mine, killing any protests I had left. I went along with it, what else could I do?

I was only 17, so I couldn’t divorce him. I had to make the best of this marriage and refusing to his demands probably wouldn’t help. Looking back on that night, I feel furious that I couldn’t escape and that nobody was there to rescue me from Tucker’s lust. After he forced me to try for a baby with him, I yelled at him, no longer able to contain my fury.

He argued back, insisting he owned the rights to my love.

I told him it wasn’t love if it was forced and he pulled his hand back to punch me. I was terrified. Surely he wouldn’t attack me.

His eyes smoldered and his nails cut into his palms, but he slowly lowered his hand.

I decided I was going to leave Tucker and my father’s control that very night. I got my clothes from the bedroom and walked outside. I took a deep breath of the cold night air, letting it flow through my lungs, and I knew I had made the right decision.

I walked and walked until I reached the park. There I sat for a long time, the chill air going straight through my pajamas and cooling my skin. A newspaper flew by and I reached my hand out to snatch it. Small town of Neverglade is in need of new residents willing to populate the town with large families. The title stretched across the front page and a smile tugged at the corner of my lips. I knew where I was moving.
